If we had a “way back” time machine we could land in 1955. You might see a mom looking well to the ways of her household by looking at serving vegetables and reading books like Science In The Kitchen A scientific treatise on food substances and their dietetic properties together with a practical explanation of the Principles of Healthful Cookery by Mrs. E.E. Kellogg. Mrs. Kellogg had a long history of titles but no first name just the wife of a cereal magnet (got to love 1893 when the book was published). Her titles were Superintendent of the Sanitarium ( hospital) School of Cookery and the Bay View Assembly School of Cookery, and Chairman of the Worlds Fair Committee on Food Supplies for Michigan.
At the turn of the century, with no refrigeration, people got bacterial infections and died sometimes because of lacking food safety guidelines and nutritional health. Kellogg was introducing alternatives and source of safety and nutrition and it picked up speed In daily life. Stay healthy by giving the body the good things it needs to build healthy cells, that builds healthy tissue, that builds healthy organs.
The “medicine” at this point was homeopathic and tried and true home remedies. Allopathic ( modern medicine that we know today) began in the 1950’s with the advent of the X-ray, and vaccine’s. Then let’s not forget the Watkins Man who sold door to door products educating the housewife in products that were safely produced and ready to use. That was everyday self-care I call one aspect of Holistic Health.
Holistic Health is based on the idea that NO SINGLE PART CAN BE UNDERSTOOD EXCEPT IN ITS RELATIONSHIP TO THE WHOLE. Therefore the 5 parts of Holistic Health are PHYSICAL, SPIRITUAL, SOCIAL, INTELLECTUAL, AND OCCUPATIONAL. We’ll begin with the history of these things and how we are as my grandma Mable said “ Not to throw out the baby with the bathwater” ( more about that in the Wisdom section). Join me monthly for a deep dive into the history and future of Holistic Health.
The adventure begins! -Blessings, Lynne
